Back Again with Something Finished

by Suzann Thompson | Apr 5, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

I finished something, finally. Eva’s yellow vest, which doubles as a sample for my next INKnitters article, is done! I darned in the last few ends and sewed on the buttons during a pleasant visit to the Coffee Studio, with Ella and my mom. Now I need to organize...

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 24, 2006 | Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The long-awaited winter issue of INKnitters is finally on the newsstand. Subscription copies should arrive any day now. I am extremely pleased with the article I wrote for this issue. It is called “Handmade and Altered Books for Knitters.” It follows in...

Textile Windfall

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 19, 2006 | Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

There are advantages to being known as textile lovers. Eva, Ella, and I reaped the benefits yesterday. My Aunt Mary used to sew a lot, but she can’t see to sew anymore. She gave us a bag of fabric, appliques, felt pieces, and trims. Eva loved a paisley print,...

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 16, 2006 | Crochet, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

It’s crochet city up here around Washington DC. Ladies are wearing fine thread crochet tops. Some are worn over solid color tops. Some are lined. Our group ate supper in malls the last two nights, and we saw those cute crochet tops in lots of shop windows....

Knittingham Puppy Farm

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 14, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

We’re back from Washington DC, where we were kept so busy by our elderly tour guide, that I was too exhausted to knit. There wasn’t time! My red poncho was admired by the group. One of the ladies is from The Netherlands, where she used to knit all the...

Most of us who grew up in the US have pledged our Most of us who grew up in the US have pledged our allegiance to the flag of the United States of America hundreds of times. We pledge our allegiance to the flag of a nation with liberty and justice for all.

That means liberty and justice are not exclusively for the people we like best, but for everybody else in the United States as well.

So let’s honor our pledge by voting for candidates who will protect liberty and justice for all, because we have pledged our allegiance to that concept over and over again.

All means all.

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by the American Thread Company. Definitely vintage. ❤️
Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.
