Textile Windfall

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 19, 2006 | Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

There are advantages to being known as textile lovers. Eva, Ella, and I reaped the benefits yesterday. My Aunt Mary used to sew a lot, but she can’t see to sew anymore. She gave us a bag of fabric, appliques, felt pieces, and trims. Eva loved a paisley print,...

Crochet, Crochet, Crochet

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 16, 2006 | Crochet, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

It’s crochet city up here around Washington DC. Ladies are wearing fine thread crochet tops. Some are worn over solid color tops. Some are lined. Our group ate supper in malls the last two nights, and we saw those cute crochet tops in lots of shop windows....

We’re back from Washington DC, where we were kept so busy by our elderly tour guide, that I was too exhausted to knit. There wasn’t time! My red poncho was admired by the group. One of the ladies is from The Netherlands, where she used to knit all the...

Sore Feet in Washington DC

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 13, 2006 | Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

We’re in Washington DC as part of a school trip. It’s great. After a very short tour of the Capitol Building today, we had lunch at the Library of Congress and then went to its Visitor’s Center. It is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever...

In the summer of 2025, @let_me_ellaborate and @wre In the summer of 2025, @let_me_ellaborate and @wren.nests created a mosaic of willow-pattern china shards for the top shelf of a little bookcase. Their work helped me muster the energy to repaint the bookcase, and later to grout the mosaic.
I put the bookcase back in my bedroom and loaded the books back on the lower shelves. The poor tissue box sits on the floor now, because I am not going to put anything on top of that mosaic, if I can help it! Thank you, Ella and Wren!❤️❤️

We stopped by The Trading Post antique mall in Lam We stopped by The Trading Post antique mall in Lampasas, TX, the other day, and found crochet galore! Doilies were everywhere! And, among other crocheted things, there were cute crocheted potholders probably from the 1940s and 50s.❤️

Comanche Mercantile on the square in Comanche, TX, Comanche Mercantile on the square in Comanche, TX, has a charming and interesting variety of textiles in the way-back room. That’s where I saw this lavender pillowcase, appliquéd with the crocheted letters H E R, and trimmed with crochet. It sent me on a deep dive to learn more about His & Hers pillowcases.

I’ve been trying for a long time to get back to blogging. Hand-embellished pillowcases were a reasonably quick and fun subject to write about.

I hope you will read about them here:

Who here had a bed doll with a fancy crocheted dre Who here had a bed doll with a fancy crocheted dress?

I never did, but that doesn’t stop me from admiring the skill and workmanship that goes into making one.

The purple dress is from Annie’s Calendar Bed Doll Society, May 1993. Over the years, Annie Potter came up with dozens of amazing bed doll patterns, each as fabulous as the next. Miss Annie sells her crochet patterns at https://annie-potter-presents.storenvy.com/

These were for sale at the Benbrook Antique Mall in Benbrook, TX. It’s definitely worth stopping by there. Make sure you have ample time, because it’s a big place.
