Knittingham Puppy Farm

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 14, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

We’re back from Washington DC, where we were kept so busy by our elderly tour guide, that I was too exhausted to knit. There wasn’t time! My red poncho was admired by the group. One of the ladies is from The Netherlands, where she used to knit all the...

Maglia and Uncinetto

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 11, 2006 | Crochet, Knitting, Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

With a German mother who knits and crochets, and her mother, and yes, her mother, I am naturally a great fan of international craft magazines. Some German mags have been available over here for years (Anna, for instance). Mon Tricot, a French knitting mag, offered...

A Texan Knits and Crochets in Italy

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 5, 2006 | Crochet, Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The Winter Olympic flame has flared and faded, and with it my Olympic dream has come and gone (until next time, anyway). I knew that my trip to Italy and the mosaic workshop would cut seriously into my knitting time. How could I know that my classmates would be so...

A Few Italian Knit, Crochet, and Mosaic Fashions

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 3, 2006 | Crochet, Knitting, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Chunky knits abounded in the streets of Ravenna and Venice last week. Girls wore mufflers and hats knitted at about 2-1/2 sts per inch. Trim sweaters were done in multicolor yarns at no more than 3 sts per inch. Mostly it was a little too cold for sweaters alone, so I...

The Yarn Tourist in Italy

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 2, 2006 | Crochet, Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

When you go to Ravenna, which you will surely want to after reading about it here, just remember that most shops are closed on Thursday afternoon. That was when I made my first trek to the yarn store, just across from one of Ravenna’s famous baptisteries. I stood...

First Moments in Ravenna

by Suzann Thompson | Feb 19, 2006 | Crochet, Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

When I walked to my hotel in Ravenna today, I ran across a parade! Kids in costume were everywhere. Confetti and streamers and silly string were everywhere, too. Different schools had floats, which some kids rode on and more kids followed. All were wearing costumes....

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by the American Thread Company. Definitely vintage. ❤️
Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.

A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of rel A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of relief, because I had finished an intense crochet design project. I designed, crocheted, wrote patterns, and took step-by-step pictures of a bunch of flowery bookmarks. Most of the ones in the picture made it into a kit published by Quarto.

The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, T The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, TX, close at 4 PM today. There’s time, if you live close by, to visit all the quilts and the Country Store, where you can find lots of previously loved items for sale. There was a pretty good stack of doilies yesterday, priced to move. Somebody bought a couple or three, and I don’t know what happened after that. Maybe there are some left.
