Crochet Cotton Flowers are Perfect Quilt Embellishment

by Suzann Thompson | Nov 1, 2016 | Art Quilt, Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Crochet Garden, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

I wondered and planned and fretted about how I might strongly stabilize a quilt so it would hold up a bunch of crocheted flowers. As the work progressed, my original vision developed. Instead of crocheting with yarn, I decided to use No. 10 crochet cotton. The flowers...

Evolution of Minimalism

by Suzann Thompson | Nov 1, 2016 | Art Quilt, Crochet, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

In the late 1990s, minimalism in home decor was all the rage in England–at least that’s what we read in the newspapers at the time. Minimalist homes were clean, cleaner, cleanest! They were calm, uncluttered. Any decoration not strictly necessary for...

by Suzann Thompson | Oct 30, 2016 | Art Quilt, Celebrate Doilies, Crochet, Exhibits & Programs, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Among brilliant yellow stars and blazing comets, the dark star shows that brightness cannot be bright without a contrasting darkness. And though it doesn’t shine with bold yellow light, a dark star is still a star. The Inspiration and Making of Crochet Comets At...

Christmas-in-July Project Done!

by Suzann Thompson | Oct 28, 2016 | Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The beauty of starting this 16-week Christmas felt kit project in July was the flexibility in the schedule. When I decided to enter a juried show with a new quilt, I was able to take a few weeks off of making the wreath to make the quilt. When the quilt was finished,...

by Suzann Thompson | Oct 12, 2016 | Art Quilt, Celebrate Doilies, Crochet, Exhibits & Programs, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild’s biennial quilt show, Threads of Texas, near Stephenville, TX, is over for 2016. I imagine there are some members still recovering from organizing and staffing this wonderful exhibit. My friend Peggy and I sold tickets for...

Most of us who grew up in the US have pledged our Most of us who grew up in the US have pledged our allegiance to the flag of the United States of America hundreds of times. We pledge our allegiance to the flag of a nation with liberty and justice for all.

That means liberty and justice are not exclusively for the people we like best, but for everybody else in the United States as well.

So let’s honor our pledge by voting for candidates who will protect liberty and justice for all, because we have pledged our allegiance to that concept over and over again.

All means all.

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by the American Thread Company. Definitely vintage. ❤️
Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.
