Red Vases Complete

by Suzann Thompson | Aug 3, 2016 | Art Quilt, Celebrate Doilies, Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Crochet Garden, Doily Adventure, Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Four a day flower sewing worked well for Firewheel Meadow, so I started with that regimen until a more urgent project distracted me. While appliqueing flowers (not my absolute favorite job in a wall hanging), I listened to an audiobook. Listening helps me stay...

Flower Arranging for Red Vases

by Suzann Thompson | Jul 27, 2016 | Art Quilt, Celebrate Doilies, Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Crochet Garden, Doily Adventure, Knitting, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

When I’m arranging embellishments for a wall hanging, I really like to get other peoples’ input. It helps me see things from a different perspective. In the past, my daughters helped me out (and here, too). In April, participants in the International Quilt...

Mama Lion Roars Again

by Suzann Thompson | Jul 25, 2016 | Art Quilt, Exhibits & Programs, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Mama Lion, which debuted in a big way last year on World Lion Day, was featured during June 2016 at the Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery, as part of the Animals Art Exhibition, Special Merit Award Category. I’m pleased to share (or show off, if you...

How Red Vases Began

by Suzann Thompson | Jul 21, 2016 | Art Quilt, Celebrate Doilies, Crochet, Crochet Garden, Doily Adventure, Knitting, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Quilters and other crafters are generous people! I picked up this long, skinny seed packet panel at a quilt guild meeting—someone was cleaning out old projects and brought it to the giveaway table. The panel was about 11 inches wide and 37.5 inches long. It lay in my...

Upcycled Backpack for Ella

by Suzann Thompson | Jun 13, 2016 | Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Crochet Garden, Life, Quilting and Crafting, TextileFusion

A couple of flowers and some buttons dressed up this backpack to the point where my 13-year-old daughter was willing to use it for her recent trip to the state of New York (as opposed to driving into town and buying a new one). We carefully removed the...

Flower and Button Arranging for Afternoon

by Suzann Thompson | Jun 1, 2016 | Art Quilt, Celebrate Doilies, Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Crochet Garden, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Blue and orange “Czech Festival Flowers” from Crochet Garden made me think of hollyhocks and other tall flower stalks. For ideas on how to arrange with tall flowers, I typed “tall flower arrangements” into Google Images. The computer screen...

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by the American Thread Company. Definitely vintage. ❤️
Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.

A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of rel A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of relief, because I had finished an intense crochet design project. I designed, crocheted, wrote patterns, and took step-by-step pictures of a bunch of flowery bookmarks. Most of the ones in the picture made it into a kit published by Quarto.

The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, T The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, TX, close at 4 PM today. There’s time, if you live close by, to visit all the quilts and the Country Store, where you can find lots of previously loved items for sale. There was a pretty good stack of doilies yesterday, priced to move. Somebody bought a couple or three, and I don’t know what happened after that. Maybe there are some left.
