Create Your Own Piece of TextileFusion

by Suzann Thompson | Apr 4, 2015 | Art Quilt, Crochet, Exhibits & Programs, Knitting, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

First I have to tell you this story. When Lark Books contracted with me to write Crochet Bouquet, my editor sent me pictures of crocheted flowers from the internet. “Here’s some inspiration,” she said, more or less. I looked through the pictures and...

Pieces of Antelope Horns

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 5, 2015 | Art Quilt, Knitting, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The day I learned about foundation piecing was a great day in my wall hanging career. The book that taught me was Precision Pieced Quilts Using the Foundation Method by Jane Hall and Dixie Haywood. The technique solved some problems I encountered while trying to piece...

A Flower Called Antelope Horns

by Suzann Thompson | Mar 5, 2015 | Art Quilt, Crochet, Knitting, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

“They look like aliens,” said my husband, when he saw this photo, blown up to poster size. It’s a very close-up view of Antelope Horns milkweed, one of the coolest flowers I love. We saw this particular plant on my parents’ place and I believe...

Firewheel Meadow Finished in Time

by Suzann Thompson | Nov 10, 2014 | Art Quilt, Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

I wish September began with a P, so we could use it in this catchy name: Productive Peptember. Okay, I’m laughing, because it looks so funny in print. Microsoft Word doesn’t have a synonym for “productive” that begins with S, so I’m off...

A Good Day at the Quilt Show

by Suzann Thompson | Oct 5, 2014 | Art Quilt, Crochet, Exhibits & Programs, Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

My mom and I went to the Threads of Texas Quilt Show on October 3 to see all the beautiful quilts made mostly by members of the Town & Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, Texas. We hadn’t even made our way to the quilt exhibit, before my friend Hazel saw...

Time to starch some of these vintage-style crochet Time to starch some of these vintage-style crochet motifs! This time I pinned them dry and used spray starch.

I crocheted them from 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep, Dover Publications.

We stopped by The Trading Post antique mall in Lam We stopped by The Trading Post antique mall in Lampasas, TX, the other day, and found crochet galore! Doilies were everywhere! And, among other crocheted things, there were cute crocheted potholders probably from the 1940s and 50s.❤️

Comanche Mercantile on the square in Comanche, TX, Comanche Mercantile on the square in Comanche, TX, has a charming and interesting variety of textiles in the way-back room. That’s where I saw this lavender pillowcase, appliquéd with the crocheted letters H E R, and trimmed with crochet. It sent me on a deep dive to learn more about His & Hers pillowcases.

I’ve been trying for a long time to get back to blogging. Hand-embellished pillowcases were a reasonably quick and fun subject to write about.

I hope you will read about them here:

Who here had a bed doll with a fancy crocheted dre Who here had a bed doll with a fancy crocheted dress?

I never did, but that doesn’t stop me from admiring the skill and workmanship that goes into making one.

The purple dress is from Annie’s Calendar Bed Doll Society, May 1993. Over the years, Annie Potter came up with dozens of amazing bed doll patterns, each as fabulous as the next. Miss Annie sells her crochet patterns at https://annie-potter-presents.storenvy.com/

These were for sale at the Benbrook Antique Mall in Benbrook, TX. It’s definitely worth stopping by there. Make sure you have ample time, because it’s a big place.
