by Suzann Thompson | Sep 16, 2008 | Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Many thanks to my cousin Phyllis for showing me how to make a homecoming mum. She was appalled at how much homecoming mums cost, so she and her daughters and their dates would get together before the homecoming football game and make their own. Their black and gold...

Yarn Stretching

by Suzann Thompson | Aug 27, 2008 | Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

I’m re-crocheting a poncho with a border of pansies, using Plain & Fancy Sheep & Wool Company’s yarn. It stretched a lot when I blocked it the first time. I didn’t like the finished garment. I redesigned it. The second time around, it...

Flower Backpack

by Suzann Thompson | Aug 12, 2008 | Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

From watching my daughter sling her backpack around, I know how much wear and tear a school backpack endures. I would hesitate to put flowers on her backpack. If she really wanted flowers, though, we would put them in an area of the backpack that isn’t likely to...

Knitted Willow Pattern Plate

by Suzann Thompson | Aug 10, 2008 | Art Quilt, Knitting, Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

We went out to check on some wild pig bones, which lie in a culvert down the dirt road from our house. We hoped they were bleached and clean enough for us to take home and add to Ella’s collection. Too bad–they still had fur and other stuff attached to...

Crochet Bob and His Pet

by Suzann Thompson | Jul 21, 2008 | Crochet, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Eva loved Ana Paula Rimoli’s Amigurumi World. She brought it on our Colorado trip in June and spent hours crocheting cute little projects (the pear, which we named Solo, a coffee cup, an octopus). We had to make a special stop so she could buy stuffing for her...

We stopped by The Trading Post antique mall in Lam We stopped by The Trading Post antique mall in Lampasas, TX, the other day, and found crochet galore! Doilies were everywhere! And, among other crocheted things, there were cute crocheted potholders probably from the 1940s and 50s.❤️

Comanche Mercantile on the square in Comanche, TX, Comanche Mercantile on the square in Comanche, TX, has a charming and interesting variety of textiles in the way-back room. That’s where I saw this lavender pillowcase, appliquéd with the crocheted letters H E R, and trimmed with crochet. It sent me on a deep dive to learn more about His & Hers pillowcases.

I’ve been trying for a long time to get back to blogging. Hand-embellished pillowcases were a reasonably quick and fun subject to write about.

I hope you will read about them here:

Who here had a bed doll with a fancy crocheted dre Who here had a bed doll with a fancy crocheted dress?

I never did, but that doesn’t stop me from admiring the skill and workmanship that goes into making one.

The purple dress is from Annie’s Calendar Bed Doll Society, May 1993. Over the years, Annie Potter came up with dozens of amazing bed doll patterns, each as fabulous as the next. Miss Annie sells her crochet patterns at https://annie-potter-presents.storenvy.com/

These were for sale at the Benbrook Antique Mall in Benbrook, TX. It’s definitely worth stopping by there. Make sure you have ample time, because it’s a big place.
