Iwannaknit: Broken Hearts

by Suzann Thompson | May 20, 2006 | Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion, Workshops

Tonight I was going to quickly cut those pieces of heart trim into flower-sized lengths, so I could quickly sew them onto the class sample and quickly write a post for the blog. Ha. The heart motifs are sort of interconnected. When I cut them apart, the motifs before...

Iwannknit: Garden of Design Bits

by Suzann Thompson | May 17, 2006 | Art Quilt, Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion, Workshops

I haven’t quite decided how to knit the way-in-the-background trees, but since that may take me another day or two, here are the other bits and pieces I have knitted for the Garden of Design workshop sample. When I set out to copy a photo, as in this project, I...

by Suzann Thompson | May 9, 2006 | Art Quilt, Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion, Workshops

We’re going to quilt our class samples for “A Garden of Design, so we need to stabilize the knitting with fusible interfacing. It can be woven or non-woven, as long as it is firm. Here’s my sample, showing the knitted layer with interfacing, the layer of...

Iwannaknit: Garden of Design Sample Finished

by Suzann Thompson | May 9, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion, Workshops

Since the last post, I embroidered long grass stems, knitted background foliage, stitched a background flowers and greenery, and sewed buttons in place. Three-year-old Ella is upset that I “stole” buttons from our button jar, particularly the pink ones,...

Iwannaknit: Garden of Design Background Done

by Suzann Thompson | May 8, 2006 | Art Quilt, Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion, Workshops

One way to knit a natural-looking scene is to work with several similar shades of each color, but only one or two rows of one color at one time, which is what we will do in the Garden of Design workshop at this year’s Iwannaknit ReTreat. This method makes for...

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by the American Thread Company. Definitely vintage. ❤️
Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.

A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of rel A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of relief, because I had finished an intense crochet design project. I designed, crocheted, wrote patterns, and took step-by-step pictures of a bunch of flowery bookmarks. Most of the ones in the picture made it into a kit published by Quarto.

The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, T The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, TX, close at 4 PM today. There’s time, if you live close by, to visit all the quilts and the Country Store, where you can find lots of previously loved items for sale. There was a pretty good stack of doilies yesterday, priced to move. Somebody bought a couple or three, and I don’t know what happened after that. Maybe there are some left.
