Textile Collecting—Andean Hat Inside

by Suzann Thompson | Jan 23, 2007 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

This hat is just beautiful. The gauge is 18 stitches per inch. The workmanship looks flawless, and includes pretty details, like the tassels and this tiny knitted ripple. I was much impressed at the subtle colors of this hat. Could they be naturally dyed? Nope. Take a...

Textile Collecting 5—Andean Hat with Alpaca

by Suzann Thompson | Dec 20, 2006 | Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

In the comments about Textile Collecting 3, a reader said that she thought these hats would be made of alpaca. I think they always were in the past, but most of the hats I have are not natural fibers. The one shown here is the only one that has any natural fiber to...

Textile Collecting 4—Andean Hat with Buttons

by Suzann Thompson | Dec 14, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Do you love these buttons?! They look so great, and they probably help keep the ear flap down. This is a lovely hat, worked in a fine gauge of 17 stitches to the inch. The straps are woven, with beads along the edges of the tape. I love the stranded garter pattern...

Textile Collecting 3—Andean Hats

by Suzann Thompson | Dec 12, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

This cute hat fits close around the head, and then it has a long, narrow tube at the top, ending with a tassel, similar to a hat knitster posted recently (and here). The knitter apparently substituted colors, whenever the original color wasn’t enough. You can...

by Suzann Thompson | Dec 10, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Men are responsible for these fine-gauge, highly detailed knitted hats of the Andes. They knit them for their little children. You can learn a lot about them from Cynthia Gravelle Lecount’s book, Andean Folk Knitting: Traditions and Techniques from Peru and...

by Suzann Thompson | Dec 6, 2006 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Sea Cat’s mother knits. No one on land or sea knits more beautifully than she does. She sits down one day, with several balls of seaweed wool and interesting treasures from the sea, and knits and embroiders Sea Cat a ”closely fitting, elegantly tailored,...

I’m proud to have served as a CKC Board member since 2018. The Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection has been years in the making, with a lot of hard work from experts on our Board of Directors. I’m not an expert in collections, but I got to help out as a proofreader. We all pitched in.

I was never very fond of this bedtime prayer, wher I was never very fond of this bedtime prayer, where children had to think about the possibility of dying in their sleep. But I have to admit this filet crocheted version of the prayer with pictures of children was Impressive. You can find the pattern for sale at vintageknitcrochet.net – swipe to see.
Seen at the Austin Citywide Vintage Sale, where Michael Longcrier has his many vintage embroideries, bandannas, quilts, crochet, and clothing piled on tables. He used to sell by the pound, but now he casts his experienced eye over your pile of stuff, and makes mental calculations to arrive at a price.

Political Circus, by Misty M. Cole, was part of 50 Political Circus, by Misty M. Cole, was part of 50 Years of Great Quilts at @quiltfestival last week. It’s a delightful riff on Eveline Foland’s Giddap the Very Democratic Donkey and Ararat the Elephant designs from the 1930s. They’re oh so familiar to me, bc I made them a few years ago. It was great to see this fun new interpretation of fun old designs. Swipe to see more.
