Crochet in Manchester

by Suzann Thompson | Jul 18, 2010 | Crochet, Doily Adventure, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion, Workshops

My first impressions of Manchester, New Hampshire, earlier this month were: the wonderful smell of pine mulch, red brick buildings, street names that reminded me of American History class, and pretty little red peppers growing into the fences along the sidewalk. Oh,...

Vintage Flower Fabric

by Suzann Thompson | Sep 26, 2009 | Crochet, Crochet Bouquet, Crochet Charm Lace, Doily Adventure, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Being a fan of flower fabric, I was happy to find this vintage pattern book, Doily Bouquet (Star Book No. 71, by American Thread Company). The doily at the top right is made of flowers crocheted separately at first, and apparently joined as they are made. For my own...

Stitches from the Past

1984 This pretty pottery basket is signed “P. Murray” and dated 1984. I bought it because it had the look of thread crochet. I think Ms. Murray pressed a piece of crochet into the clay before she shaped it into a basket. Sunnydaze, one of the Ravelry...

by Suzann Thompson | Jun 16, 2006 | Crochet, Doily Adventure, Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The Joneses, who live near us, recently opened an antique store in Dublin, Texas, across from the Dr. Pepper Museum. We were already acquainted, because Mrs. Jones’ granddaughters were on the same softball team as my daughter. My mother, my girls, and I had a...

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.

A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of rel A year ago I was breathing a bunch of sighs of relief, because I had finished an intense crochet design project. I designed, crocheted, wrote patterns, and took step-by-step pictures of a bunch of flowery bookmarks. Most of the ones in the picture made it into a kit published by Quarto.

The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, T The Town ‘n Country Quilt Guild of Stephenville, TX, close at 4 PM today. There’s time, if you live close by, to visit all the quilts and the Country Store, where you can find lots of previously loved items for sale. There was a pretty good stack of doilies yesterday, priced to move. Somebody bought a couple or three, and I don’t know what happened after that. Maybe there are some left.
