Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ella’s Cardigan is Done!

by Suzann Thompson | Feb 12, 2008 | Knitting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

As we sat at our favorite coffee shop yesterday, watching cartoons on the television, I darned in the last few threads and sewed the buttons on Ella’s pink cardigan. She put it on right away. She wore it for over an hour, which is about 58 minutes longer than I...

Amoebae, Sweater Insides, Tag

by Suzann Thompson | Jan 30, 2008 | Knitting, Life, Quilting and Crafting, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Inspired by the stuffed creatures on the cover of the most recent issue of Craft: magazine, Eva made these felt amoebas or, if you want to be correct about it, amoebae. “How do you pronounce that?” we asked each other over and over. So I finally looked it...

UFOs in the Sky in a Book in My Totebag

by Suzann Thompson | Jan 25, 2008 | Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

The small town of Dublin, Texas, is primarily known as the home of the first Dr. Pepper bottling plant. Dublin Dr. Pepper is still made with pure cane sugar instead of nasty high fructose corn syrup. But now we’re in the news–local, national, even...

Ella’s Stocking

by Suzann Thompson | Jan 8, 2008 | Crochet, Knitting, Life, Retro Blog Post, TextileFusion

Here it is, in all its pink glory—Ella’s Christmas stocking! It’s very ‘Ella.’ The stocking was ready in time for Christmas, and Santa put lots of good stuff into it. After Christmas, I decorated the other side, so doesn’t matter which...

Most of us who grew up in the US have pledged our Most of us who grew up in the US have pledged our allegiance to the flag of the United States of America hundreds of times. We pledge our allegiance to the flag of a nation with liberty and justice for all.

That means liberty and justice are not exclusively for the people we like best, but for everybody else in the United States as well.

So let’s honor our pledge by voting for candidates who will protect liberty and justice for all, because we have pledged our allegiance to that concept over and over again.

All means all.

Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate Wow! This lovely collar* comes with a Certificate of Authenticity by some supposed authority in the UK, certifying that it is real, authentic Irish crochet.

Do you see the problem with this?

It goes to show that some claims on Certificates of Authenticity are not true. And that not all people calling themselves experts are what they claim to be.

It certainly is beautiful lace, just not Irish Crochet or any other kind of crochet.

* It really is a collar, but I wanted you to be able to see the details of its construction. Should have taken a picture of the whole thing. Maybe next time.

Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by Close! Mostly I used this No. 10 crochet cotton by the American Thread Company. Definitely vintage. ❤️
Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doil Crocheting these vintage bedspread/tablecloth/doily motifs has been educational. I think they’re beautiful, but I’m -not- tempted to make a bedspread or tablecloth out of any one of them.

The square at top right, designed in the 1940s or so by Cecilia Vanek, is from the Puritan Bedspread aka County Clare Bedspread. Free pattern here: https://freevintagecrochet.com/bedspread-patterns/star208/puritan-bedspread-pattern

The other three are in 150 Favorite Crochet Designs, Ed. Mary Carolyn Waldrep (Dover), and online sources.
